Chéri Samba at the Maillol Museum

Chéri Samba, born in 1956 in the Congolese nation, undeniably stands out as the African painter of his generation with the most dazzling reputation. As an emissary of "popular painting" Coming from Kinshasa, he worked greatly to spread the notoriety of this informal movement through his figurative canvases in bright colors, challenging, denouncing, caricaturing and provoking, often tinged with humor, in a style that is anything but candid. p>

This exhibition at the Maillol Museum represents the first retrospective devoted to the painter's work, spanning 40 years of creativity. Presenting more than 50 paintings, it offers an itinerary through various "Sambaian" themes, highlighting the self-portrait as the central pivot of his painting, Congo and Africa, geopolitical issues and environmental issues, the history of art, and finally, women. This last theme creates an unprecedented dialogue with the work of Maillol, insinuating itself into the rooms of the museum.

All of the works on display come from the Jean Pigozzi collection, the most imposing compilation of contemporary African art in the world. For more than three decades, this collection has contributed to the growth and recognition of sub-Saharan African artists on the international art scene.
